These are incense recipes directly from my personal Book of shadows. I have collected these from many sources so I can't give proper credit to who I got them from.
They way I make these incenses is I gather what herbs I need on my altar, put my mortar and pestle on the altar, and do a short meditation to clear my mind. Then I begin adding the herbs to the mortar bowl, charging them with my intent. I crush them slightly. I very rarely crush them into a powder. Then I put them into a container to store them until I want to use them.
When I want to use the incenses I have created, I do recharge them a little. To use these homemade incenses, you need self-igniting charcoal disks that can be found in most Occult/New Age stores. I also found them in a Health food store by the aroma therapy section. After you have lit the charcoal and placed it in a good heat proof container, add a pinch of the herb mixture to the charcoal. Now, some of the mixtures will not smell like them do before you burn them! Some can be rather pungent.
Add more of the mixture as you wish when you are done, you can put the charcoal out by covering it with salt, cat litter, earth, or even with water (I do that when outside).
Now, on to the incenses!
Air Incense
4 parts benzoin
2 parts gum mastic
1 part lavender
1 pinch wormwood
Used to invoke the air element, increase intellectual powers, to obtain travel, communication, study. Also burned during divinitory rituals.
Altar Incense
3 parts frankincense
2 parts myrrh
1 part cinnamon
A general incense to purify the altar area.
Aphrodite Incense
1 part cinnamon
1 part cedar
a few drops cypress oil
Burn during rituals designed to attract love.
Apollo Incense
4 parts frankincense
2 parts myrrh
2 parts cinnamon
1 part bay
Burn during divination and healing rituals.
Astral Travel Incense
3 parts sandalwood
3 parts benzoin
1 part mugwort
1 part Dittany of Crete
Burn a small amount to aid in projection the astral body.
Consecration Incense
2 parts wood aloe
1 part mace
1 part gum arabic
1 part benzoin
When purifying or consecrating magical tools, jewelry, quartz crystals and other stones, smolder this incense and pass the item through its smoke several times. Do this while visualizing the fumes purifying the object.
Dream Incense
2 parts sandalwood
1 part rose petals
1 part camphor
a few drops tuberose bouquet
a few drops jasmine oil
Burn a bit in the bedroom prior to sleep to induce psychic dreams. Remove the censor from the room before retiring.
* Only burn pure camphor. If you can't find any substitute a few drops of spirits of camphor, which is easier to find.
Esbat Incense
4 parts frankincense
3 parts myrrh
2 parts benzoin
1 part sandalwood
1 part gardenia petals
1/2 part orris
1/2 part thyme
1/2 part poppy seed
1/2 part rose petals
Burn during rituals and spells on the Full Moon.
Full Moon Ritual Incense
3 parts frankincense
1 part sandalwood
Burn during Full Moon rituals, or simply to attune with the Moon.
Healing Incense
1 part rosemary
2 parts juniper berries
Burn to speed healing while visualizing.
Hecate Incense
1\2 teaspoon dried bay leaves
1\2 teaspoon dried mint leaves
1\2 teaspoon dried thyme
pinch of myrrh resin
pinch of frankincense resin
13 drops cypress oil
3 drops camphor oil
Meditation Incense
1 part gum acacia or gum arabic
1 part sandalwood
Burn a small amount before meditation to relax the conscious mind
